How to Find a Place From an Old Photo (When You Can’t Remember Its Name)

Published October 5, 2026

You remember the view, the table by the window, the sign at the trailhead. You don’t remember the name. If the photo came from your iPhone, the place is almost always still inside it. Here’s how to get it back in iOS 27, and what to try when a photo has no location.

Start with the photo itself

  1. Open the photo in Photos and swipe up to show its details.
  2. The place name under the small map tells you the town. Photos names places by municipality, so it may not be the name you remember (more on that here).
  3. Tap the small map. The pin is where you were standing. Zoom in: the restaurant, trail or overlook is usually right under it.
  4. Tap the place name to open the spot in Apple Maps, where you can see what’s there and get directions back.

Don’t have the photo handy? Search for it

Photos search knows where your photos were taken.

When the photo has no location

Screenshots, scans and photos from cameras without GPS carry no place. Two things to try:

Where EverMap fits

Photos answers where was this one taken? We’re building EverMap for the bigger question: where have I been? It turns your library into a map of the places in your life, so the place you half-remember sits beside every other place you’ve photographed, and you can ask Scout about your travels. Flag a place you want to return to and it joins one list. The AI runs on-device; EverMap keeps thumbnails and place details, and your originals stay in Photos. It isn’t out yet — join the waitlist to hear when it launches.

FAQ

How do I see where an old photo was taken on iPhone? Open the photo, swipe up, and tap the small map. The pin marks where it was taken.

Why does Photos show the wrong town? Photos labels places by municipality, not by the nearest landmark. The pin itself is in the right spot.

Can I find a restaurant from a photo of my food? If the photo has a location, its pin usually sits on the restaurant. Tap the place name to open it in Apple Maps.

What if the photo has no location? Check the photos taken just before and after it on the same day, then add the place with Adjust.
