Your iPhone has been making a travel map for years: every photo with a location is already a pin. The question is what you want the map to do. Here are three ways to turn your photos into a travel map, and what each one asks of you.
The photo map shows everywhere you’ve taken a picture (how to open it in iOS 27). Photos also groups trips for you:
Photos picks the trips itself, from when and where you were away from home, and names each one after the nearest town — a weekend camp on a forest road came back labeled with the town down the highway. You can’t rename a trip, change its dates or add a note, and there’s no way to take a photo out of one. You can edit a photo’s date or location, but a location has to be a place Apple Maps can find, and a campsite on a forest road may not be one.
Turn on its tracker and Polarsteps records your route while you travel; you add photos to each step. It’s built for the trip you’re on. An older trip you add by hand, one step at a time.
Entries carry a location, and a map view shows each entry where it happened. It’s as complete as your writing habit.
| Uses photos you have | Records new trips | You decide what goes in | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Photos | Yes | Automatically | No — Photos decides |
| Polarsteps | Only by adding them | Yes, while tracking | Yes |
| Day One | Only the entries you write | Only the entries you write | Yes |
We’re building EverMap for the photos you already took: it turns your library into a private map of the places in your life. Flag the places you want to return to, and turn memories into trips you put together yourself — stops in order, marked completed when you’re home. It stays on your devices and your iCloud. It isn’t out yet — join the waitlist to hear when it launches.
Can I make a travel map without an app? Yes. The map in Photos already shows every photo that has a location.
Can I edit a trip in Apple Photos? Not the trip itself. You can change each photo’s date, time or location, but not the trip’s name, dates or photos.
Why are some photos missing from the map? A photo needs location data to appear. Here’s why some aren’t on it, and how to fix them.
Does Polarsteps work for old trips? You can add past steps by hand. Its tracker covers trips from the moment you turn it on.
